Why I Stopped Taking NMN: The Real Reasons People Quit, Explained

I stopped taking NMN. Not because of a headline, and not because of a YouTube video, but because after months of taking it I could not honestly answer a simple question: is this still doing anything?

That is the most common reason people quit, and it turns out it is usually a problem of expectations rather than of the supplement. The other reasons people stop are cost, side effects, uncertainty about NAD+, losing confidence in what is actually in the bottle, and watching someone they follow switch to something else.

I did go back to it, and the thing that changed was not new evidence. It was being able to see a genuine, authentic test certificate. Below are the reasons that people I have spoken to have stopped, what the research actually says about it, and how to decide whether you should.

The real reasons people stop taking NMN

"I didn't feel anything"

This was mine, and it is the most common by a distance. NMN is not a stimulant. Nobody in the researchGabriel Tsiattalou reported a noticeable lift, because that is not what was being measured.

Human trials have measured blood NAD+ levels, safety markers and specific physiological outcomes. A randomised, placebo-controlled trial in healthy middle-aged adults tracked blood NAD+ and physical performance across different doses over 60 days, and a widely covered trial in prediabetic women found an effect on muscle insulin sensitivity, which is a laboratory measurement rather than a feeling.

So does NMN work? On the measures studied, it raises NAD+ in the blood reliably, and the evidence for downstream outcomes continues to grow. Looking back, I was waiting to feel something the research never promised. Dose and timing matter as well, and both are covered in Manapura’s guide to NMN benefits, timing and dosage.

NMN side effects

"NMN side effects" is one of the most searched phrases about this ingredient. The NMN supplement side effects most commonly reported are mild and digestive: nausea, stomach discomfort, loose stools. Headaches and flushing come up less often, and infrequently some people find sleep is disturbed if they take it very late in the day.

Human studies generally report NMN to be well tolerated. A Japanese study gave single oral doses of up to 500mg and reported no significant problems, and later trials have used daily dosing over weeks without any major safety signals.

That is reassuring at a population level but no comfort at all if you personally feel sick. Taking it with food, lowering the dose, or moving it to the morning are sensible things to try before giving up.

Methylation and TMG

A more technical reason, and one that circulates widely. The body uses methyl groups when processing NMN, and the theory is that heavy supplementation could draw on the body's methyl supply. It is why many people pair NMN with TMG, also called trimethylglycine, which is a methyl donor.

The evidence that this is a real problem at normal supplement doses is very thin, but the pairing is inexpensive, well tolerated and logical enough that plenty of people take both. Manapura’s TMG guide covers what it does and who tends to use it, and the NAD+ Duo pairs the two.

Cost

NMN is among the more expensive supplements on a monthly basis, and that is harder to justify when the benefit is invisible. Plenty of people stop at the renewal, not because of new information, but because they have to decide again.

If cost is the issue, compare on price per milligram rather than price per bottle, because strength and serving size vary enormously between brands. A cheap bottle at a low dose is not better value, it is less product.

Quality worries

This is the reason I think is most justified, and it is the one that eventually brought me back. Some products on the market are under-dosed, impure, or both, and the customer has no way of knowing.

Reading a test certificate is not complicated. It should name the product, the sample ID/batch, the laboratory and the date, and give a purity figure as a specific percentage. If a brand will not show you one, the number on the label is an assertion rather than a result. There is also a real difference between beta-NMN and alpha-NMN, which is worth understanding before you compare prices.

That is the standard Manapura hold their own product to now, and the certificates are published in their Trust Centre rather than described in marketing copy. It is the reason I take it again, and it is the test I would apply to any brand.

Regulation headlines

A lot of people stopped simply because they could not work out whether they were still supposed to be taking it. The US position on NMN's supplement status has moved back and forth, and the UK has its own separate process, which produced a run of confusing headlines.

Influencers switching

Some people stop because someone they trust did. An influencer publicly moving away from NMN towards a different NAD+ precursor such as NR, is the kind of switch that shifts a lot of opinion.

Treated neutrally, it is a debate rather than a verdict. NMN and NR are different molecules with overlapping aims and separate bodies of evidence.

What happens when you stop taking NMN?

The answer: Less than people expect, and less than happened to me, which was nothing at all. NAD+ levels gradually return to where they were before supplementation, over days to weeks, and there is no evidence of withdrawal effects. NMN is not something your body becomes dependent on, so stopping does not need tapering.

What people report on such forums as Reddit is mostly consistent with that: a slow return to baseline, no crash.

If you stop and feel exactly the same, that is the expected result rather than a surprise. It is also, inconveniently, not evidence either way.

Should you stop? A quick checklist

Worth continuing if:

  • You are taking a tested product at a sensible daily dose and can see the certificate.
  • You are judging it over months, against something you can actually track.
  • You are taking it as part of a routine, rather than expecting it to be the ‘magic answer’.

Worth stopping if:

  • Your doctor has advised against it.
  • It consistently upsets your stomach after you have tried food, timing and a lower dose.
  • You cannot afford it.

Worth adjusting your routine / re-evaluating if:

  • You took it for just a few weeks rather than assessing over a few months.
  • You cannot find a purity figure or a current test certificate for the product you bought.
  • You were taking a low dose irregularly or inconsistently.
  • You cannot remember what the dose was.
  • You expected a noticeable lift.
  • You changed several things at once, so there was never a clean read.

If you carry on, how to get the most from it

Four things make the difference, and none of them are exotic.

Dose. Human trials have used a wide range, commonly from a few hundred milligrams up to around a gram a day. Pick a dose that matches the research rather than the cheapest one available.

Timing. Morning is the usual recommendation, partly because of the sleep disruption some people report when taking it late.

Pairing. TMG is the common partner, for the methylation reason above. People also pair NMN with trans-resveratrol, and the reasoning behind that stack is worth understanding before you buy both.

A tested product. This is the one that matters most, and it is the one that changed my mind. Manapura's pure NMN supplement states 99.97% purity, provides 1000mg per serving across two capsules, and is made in cGMP and ISO 9001 certified facilities, with the current batch certificate published rather than claimed.

If you would rather compare the market first, that is a reasonable thing to do, and Manapura’s comparison of UK NMN products is the place to start.

FAQs

Does NMN have side effects?

The side effects most commonly reported are mild and digestive: nausea, stomach discomfort and loose stools, with headaches, flushing and disturbed sleep mentioned less often. Human studies to date have reported NMN to be well tolerated at the doses studied. Taking it with food, lowering the dose or moving it to the morning usually helps.

Is NMN safe long term?

Human trials so far have run for weeks to a few months and have reported NMN to be well tolerated over those periods. NMN is a food supplement rather than a medicine, and anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, taking prescription medication or managing a health condition should speak to a healthcare professional first.

What happens when you stop taking NMN?

NAD+ levels gradually return to where they were before, over days to weeks. There is no evidence of withdrawal effects and no need to taper. Most people report no noticeable change on stopping, which is consistent with how gradual the effects are said to be in the first place.

Is NMN worth it?

That depends on what you expect and what you are paying per milligram rather than per bottle. If you are paying for a product with no published purity figure or test certificate, you are paying for packaging. If you are judging it over months on a tested product, it is a much more defensible purchase.

Is NMN banned in the UK?

NMN is widely sold in the UK as a food supplement, including from major retailers. The confusion around this arose from the regulatory picture in the US which moved back and forth. The UK runs its own separate process, which generated a lot of headlines.

Does NMN have long term side effects, or affect the kidneys?

There is no established evidence of long-term side effects or of kidney harm from NMN at the doses used in human trials. Anyone with kidney disease or another ongoing condition should speak to a healthcare professional before starting.

Are there side effects from taking NMN and TMG together?

Both are well tolerated and the combination is common, with TMG taken as a methyl donor alongside NMN. Digestive upset is infrequently reported with either. If in doubt, check with your doctor, and as with any combination, introduce one at a time so you can tell what is causing what.
